Kratom: A New Drug Lawyers Need To Stay Far Away From – Above the Law

They don’t actually go shopping for a high. They’re just trying to function. It’s not even that they feel euphoria from it. They feel better, more efficient and they start using it regularly—and then they can’t function without it.

— Robynn Moraites, director of the North Carolina Lawyer Assistance Program, in comments given to Law.com on unintended Kratom addiction among legal professionals. According to Moraites, lawyers are reportedly using Kratom, an unregulated herbal substance, to “improve their edge, stamina, productivity and focus,” but then find that they’re unable to stop using it. “Lawyers need to be very aware that just because something is ‘natural’ does not mean that it’s safe,” she said. “Arsenic is natural and organic, but if you consume it, you’re going to die.”
